When convicted bigamist and criminal defense attorney Bartholomew Skeleton escapes from prison, Ivy is forced to confront the very real possibility that the past is about to come crashing back into her life.

What follows is Chapter One of Death at Heart’s Desire.

CHAPTER 1

A disembodied voice filled the room with words that shook me to the core.

“Convicted bigamist Bartholomew Skeleton has escaped from the Rockville State Penitentiary.”

My coffee mug slipped from my hand and smashed to pieces on the kitchen countertop. I must be hearing things. I caught my breath and listened intently for the next words.

“Skeleton, one of Philadelphia’s most prominent criminal defense attorneys, escaped the minimum security prison while serving a five year sentence. Skeleton was married simultaneously to former Olympic equestrian and magazine publisher, Ivy Snow, and world champion Saddleseat horsewoman, Marion Fallon. He was last seen on work detail in the south field of the facility’s farm at about five p.m. yesterday. If anyone knows the whereabouts of Bartholomew Skeleton, please contact the Pennsylvania State Police. This is Jane Jefferson reporting for WPSA-FM News.”

I stood frozen. It couldn’t be. My worst nightmare.

I lived in dread of the day that man got out of jail, knowing that the first thing on his agenda would be revenge. My mind echoed with Bart’s last words as they took him into custody.

“I’ll get you for this, Ivy… you bitch!”

Being the complete narcissist that Bart is, he could never accept the fact that he landed in jail because he committed a crime. Oh no, he blamed me because I had the audacity to turn him in.

What should I do?

I looked around at the floor to ceiling windows that graced every room at Little Paddocks. Except for the alarm system hooked up to the doors, our farmhouse was a virtual sieve. Anyone with any amount of determination could break in. I glanced at the closet that held my gun safe.

My only firearm is a Beretta 12 gauge used for sporting clays. I know I should have a handgun, but I never got around to buying one. Now I would have to move fast to protect myself and the twins. Not that I thought Bart would harm them, but there was always the chance they could get caught in the crossfire.

The phone was ringing in the background. I finally snapped out of my trance and picked up the receiver. Detective John Garrett’s rich, deep voice came over the line, instantly sending a wave of relief through my body.

“Hello Ivy, I suppose you heard about Bart. Are you okay?” he asked.

“Yes. Well, no. I just heard about it on the radio and I’m still trying to get over the shock. How did this happen, John?”

“Prepare yourself, Ivy. It’s really bizarre. From what we can piece together, Bart was out working in the fields, as he does most days, when he met up with Samantha Gethen, who picked him up in her Subaru Forester, and they simply drove away.”

“Who is Samantha Gethen?”

“She is the wife of Reverend Jeremiah Gethen, chaplain at Rockville.”

“What? What does she have to do with Bart?”

“She helped him escape, or maybe it would be more accurate to say they escaped together. Apparently, they concocted a plan while she was ‘ministering’ to him as part of her husband’s Finding Religion program at the prison.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me!”

“No, I’m afraid not. Bart must have sweet talked her into believing he was in love with her.”

“That doesn’t surprise me. I know how persuasive he can be in that department,” I said, still trying to recover from his betrayal of me.

“As crazy as it sounds, Mrs. Gethen met up with Bart while he was on unsupervised farm detail and he simply got in the car with her and off they went.”

“So much for minimum security prisons.”

Bart can turn on the charm, alright, but to talk a preacher’s wife into helping him escape from jail… wow. Actually, nothing Bart does should surprise me. He’s got balls of steel.

“What are the police doing about it?”

“We put out an all points bulletin, we’re setting up roadblocks on all the major highways, and checkpoints at the airport and bus station. That’s all we can do for now, but Ivy, I’m worried about you. I’m calling Sentinel Security to come out and tighten things up around there. Also, I’m bringing out my Luger. That 12 gauge you have won’t be much help if Bart suddenly tries to break in.”

I sat down on the counter stool and tried to process it all. I never felt so isolated. It was as if I could hear the walls breathe. Little Paddocks had always been a safe haven for me. Now I felt trapped.

My thoughts turned to Jayson and Jaycee. Thank heaven the twins were in New York with Sloane. She was treating them to a Taylor Swift concert to celebrate their fourteenth birthday. I needn’t worry about them when they were with Sloane. She’s got superior survival skills.

I punched in her number on my speed dial.

“Hi Sloane! How’s it going?”

“Great, Ivy. The kids and I are having a wonderful time. Just ate hot dogs from a vendor’s cart at Rockefeller Center. They got a big kick out of it. Said there’s nothing like it in Wellington, Pennsylvania. No kidding! What’s up with you?”

“Brace yourself, Sloane. I have big news. Bart escaped from prison yesterday.”

The silence on the other end of the phone seemed to last for an eternity. I thought maybe I’d lost the signal. Finally she spoke.

“This is very bad, Ivy. You’ve got to protect yourself. You know Bart. He’ll be determined to make good on his threat for revenge. He’s coming after you. You know that.”

“John’s on his way over to tighten things up around here.”

“Maybe you should ask John to stay with you until Bart is caught.”

“Ah, we’re not exactly in that place in our relationship.”

“There’s no time like the present,” she said with a smile in her voice. “Don’t worry about the kids. They can stay here with me until this thing is over.”

“Jaycee hasn’t said anything about having visions of Bart, has she?”

“No, she hasn’t.”

“Good. Keep a close eye on her, Sloane. Her psychic ability can kick in at any time. If she gets real quiet on you, that’s the first sign.”

“I’ll call you right away if anything happens. What have you told the kids about Bart? You know, about his not being around or never hearing from him?”

“I told them he’s in the witness protection program.”

“You told them what?”

“I told them he had turned state’s evidence against some mobster who wanted to hire him as his defense attorney. I told them he had to assume a new identity to protect us all.”

“Wow, Ivy. What a story. The kids bought that?”

“Yes. You have to remember they were much younger when all this came down. They would have believed anything I told them. The witness protection story is now just a part of their lives. They never question it. As a matter of fact, they think of Bart as a hero, when they think of him at all.”

“But what are you going to do when they learn the truth?”

“I don’t know. That’s where this genius idea of mine falls apart. I was in such a state of confusion when I concocted that story. I didn’t give enough thought to how they would be affected if Bart were to come back into their lives. I guess I’ll have to cross that bridge when I come to it.”

Sloane Parker frowned. “Well, you better start thinking about it now before all this hits the fan.”

“I know, you’re right. Oh, Sloane, I’ve got to go. I see someone coming up the drive. It must be John and the security company.”

“Be sure before you open the door.”

“Okay, kiss the twins for me.”

“I will… and Ivy, please be careful.”

The Sentinel Security guys set to task laying out their plans for increased coverage. John put his hand on my elbow and guided me toward the kitchen.

“Ivy, I need to talk to you,” he whispered in my ear.

I felt my heart starting to race. Was it his close proximity, or anxiousness about what he had to tell me?

He turned around to face me, his eyes burrowing deep into mine. He kept his hand on my arm.

“Ivy, there’s been a development in the case.”

I took a deep breath.

“Samantha Gethen’s dead body has been found floating in the Ashland River.”

And just like that, Ivy’s world begins to unravel.

One of the things I enjoy most about writing The Ivy Snow Mystery Series is weaving suspense into the familiar rhythms of equestrian life. Horse farms, family dynamics, old secrets, and danger all have a way of colliding when Ivy Snow is involved.

Of course, appearances can be deceiving.

I’ve always loved mysteries, but I wanted to write one that felt at home in the equestrian world. Not simply a mystery with horses in the background, but one where horse people, horse towns, and horse culture were woven into the fabric of the story.

Ivy Snow emerged from that idea.

She’s resilient, imperfect, occasionally stubborn, and determined to rebuild her life after a series of devastating setbacks. Through her eyes, readers enter Wellington, a charming horse town where beautiful facades often conceal darker truths.

One of my favorite things about writing the Ivy Snow Mysteries is the setting itself. Wellington may be fictional, but it contains pieces of many horse towns I’ve loved over the years. It’s a place where history matters, horses are woven into daily life, and beneath every polished surface lies the possibility of something darker.

Murder at Morgan House is where Ivy’s journey begins.

It All Begins With a Confession

“I had the perfect opportunity to murder Bart.”

CHAPTER ONE

I had the perfect opportunity to murder Bart. I had the motive, too.

Only a consummate narcissist like Bart Skeleton, Esq., would have the audacity to marry two women in the same place at the same time and think he could get away with it. It was bad enough that he screwed me over, but his own children! We had twins when he married Marion Fallon. What did he think would become of them? But then again, we have to remember that Bart never did think of anyone but himself.

Dr. Templeton Frick picked up his pad and pencil and started taking notes. “How did Bart’s behavior make you feel, Ivy?

“How did it make me feel? Devastated, humiliated, heartbroken , Doctor, that’s how it made me feel. I spent countless hours trying to figure out where I went wrong. Was I such a terrible wife that he felt like he needed another one to compensate for me? And as far as my own judgment goes—what was I thinking when I married him in the first place?”

“Have you worked through any of these feelings, Ivy?”

“No, I don’t think I have worked through them, Doctor. That’s why I’m in therapy.”

I hope this guy knows what he’s doing. If not, it serves me right for picking a therapist out of the Yellow Pages. He does have an assortment of framed diplomas all over the walls, so that’s a little reassuring anyway.

I suppose some people might think Bart was justified in his self-admiration. After all, he was a very successful criminal defense attorney, whose specialty was rape and murder. He was very much in demand. He was certainly good-looking in a suave Michael Douglas sort of way, and he had managed to ingratiate himself with the upper echelons of Philadelphia society, garnering invitations to all the best parties. Bart was the golden boy.

“I felt plenty sorry for myself, Doctor, but strangely enough I felt sorry for Marion, too. I mean, I did resent her, of course, but after all Bart duped her too. After I met her, I realized that she deserved justice almost as much as I did. Although jail would be too good for him, after weighing the pros and cons I realized that in the unlikely event that I would be convicted, it wasn’t worth life in prison, or heaven forbid, the electric chair to get even with Bart. But get even with him I did.”

Dr. Frick squirmed slightly in his giant leather chair. He removed his rimless glasses and smoothed back his thinning silver hair. He pulled down the sleeves of his brown tweed jacket, and struggled to launch himself into a standing position. “I’m sorry Ivy, but that’s all the time we have for today. We’ll have to explore your feelings about Bart in more detail next week. I’ll see you then, same time,” he said with a half-hearted smile.

I took the ancient elevator to the lobby and stepped out onto the sidewalk, taking in a deep breath of fresh spring air. I could smell the sweet fragrance of the daffodils that were popping up in everyone’s front yard; I took a moment to enjoy this fleeting time, when nature comes to life. There was a soft breeze blowing and it ruffled my long blonde hair; I should have worn a hat.

Walking back to the parking lot a small sign caught my eye. It was planted in the front yard of an impressive Victorian-style home, and said Historic Morgan House circa 1837. I love architecture and design, and I get excited when I stumble across a great example of period style. I was studying the lines when I noticed the figure of a man in the window. He appeared to be an older guy from what I could tell. He was dressed in plaid, which did nothing for his physique, but the red bow tie he wore was an interesting accent—don’t see many of those nowadays. Our eyes met, and I was a little embarrassed to be caught staring at his house. I gave him a friendly wave, but he just stood there, perfectly still, and did not wave back. A creepy feeling came over me and I quickly moved on.

As I passed by the Coach House B&B next door, I saw Roberta Bristol cleaning the turquoise green gingerbread trim on her porch banisters. “Good morning, Roberta. Beautiful day, isn’t it?” I said.

She looked up from her task, and squinted at me. “Ivy Snow? Is that you?” Roberta never wanted to wear her glasses. She thought they made her look old. Well, she was sixty-five if she was a day.

“Yes, Roberta,” I said with a sigh.

She pulled down her navy blue Nittany Lion sweatshirt in an effort to conceal the ten pounds she had gained over the holidays. The extra weight didn’t do her any favors. She was short to begin with, probably about five feet, five feet one at best. She wore her black kinky hair piled high on top of her head in an effort to add inches, but the effect was more like an afro that had seen better days.

“Looks like we’re finally getting a spring,” she said with a toothy smile.

It was especially good news for her; warmer spring weather would bring back the tourists.

“Hey, Roberta, I just passed by Morgan House and I saw a guy standing in the window. Who is he?”

“He’s a pain in the butt, that’s who he is. Name’s Mike Smythe. Michael Tellington Smythe, to be precise,” she said with an air of haughtiness meant to characterize him.

I looked at her quizzically, egging her to go on.

I can’t stand that guy. He thinks he knows everything. He says I have no taste. Can you imagine that?”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“He had the nerve to go to the zoning board and file a complaint about the color I painted my B&B. Said it was garish, and that I was ruining the understated beauty of East Main Street. He is insisting that I repaint the house in a more subtle color to blend in with the other buildings. White bread and mayonnaise, if you ask me.”

“Really?” I said, trying my best to sound indignant just to get into the spirit of things.

“I’m not about to spend another $8,000 to have this place repainted. Besides, my guests love the color. I’ve heard more than one person comment that Candy Apple Red makes them feel warm and welcome.” She shook her finger. “Little does that troublemaker know I happen to be on the zoning board of this town, and his petition is going straight into the circular file, where it belongs.”

“You show ’em, Roberta,” I said, and went on my way, making a mental note to stay on her good side.

I hopped into my little BMW Roadster and spun around Wellington Towne Commons on my way to a meeting at the Field & Stream Club. The landscape crews were hard at work mulching and fertilizing to create the stunning gardens that were the pride and joy of the citizens of Wellington, Pennsylvania.

I moved to Wellington, well, actually I moved to a small horse farm just outside of town, right after Bart was incarcerated. He got five years on the bigamy charge, and I can still hear his parting words ringing in my ears. “I’ll get you for this, you bitch.” Of course, Bart blamed me for the fact that he was going to jail. Never mind that he was the one who committed the crime.

I swerved my car to miss Dr. Corbin Montrose, plastic surgeon, dressed in his Revolutionary War garb on the way to re-enact the Battle of Wellington. Wellingtonians are passionate about their historic roots. Every war fought on American soil included at least one battle in Wellington. With all of that cannon fire going on, it’s a wonder the town is still standing.

Fortunately, my Roadster has good torque, and I was able to avoid smashing into The Folly; a lacy white Victorian structure set in the center of the commons. It is the symbol of Wellington itself, and serves as bandstand, photo op, preteen hangout, and wedding chapel. Many a union has been sealed there by the mayor of Wellington, who also happens to be the town’s premier appliance repairman.

For all of Wellington’s quintessential small-town charm, I couldn’t help but sense sinister underpinnings. It’s like that old cliché, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. I was about to find out that clichés stand the test of time for a reason.

It was a serendipitous experience for me because it is the setting for a new novel in The Ivy Snow Mystery Series I'm writing. Ivy inherits a racehorse bound for the Kentucky Derby, but being trained in Lexington. Ivy, Jaycee, Crystal, and Sloane make Campbell House their home away from home!

It was my home away from home for a few days, too. If you’ve never had the opportunity to visit a movie set and watch a scene being shot, it’s hard to imagine the details that go into it.

Author Lisa Wysocky’s novel The Opium Equation…A Cat Enright Mystery is being filmed at the beautiful Houstondale Farm in nearby Paris, Kentucky, and I got a behind-the-scenes look at how it all comes together!

The Opium Equation is an upcoming independent equestrian mystery film adapted from the award-winning book series by Lisa Wysocky. Directed by Asbury University collaborators, the film follows Cat Enright, an independent horse trainer who must solve a murder and locate a missing boy to clear her own name.

Next, the luxury bus whisked us off to Crossgate Gallery, which specializes in equine-related art. Its impressive inventory ranges from 19th- and early-20th-century classic works to contemporary paintings and sculpture.

Our final stop was at the Keenland Library for an amazing tour!

It is home to artwork, memorabilia, more than 40,000 books dating from the late 1500s, 5 million photographic negatives and prints dating from the late 1800s, and millions of newspaper and magazine articles about all aspects of the industry from the early 1700s to today. We even got to go into the hermetically sealed vault!

Keeneland Library’s newest exhibit and education initiative, Raíces: The Making of Latino Legacies in Racing, showcases 100 groundbreaking Latino figures in the Thoroughbred racing and breeding industry from the late 1800s to today.

Why We Use Hydrosols (Not Essential Oils)

Hydrosols are gentler than essential oils, making them safer for regular use on horses’ sensitive skin. While essential oils are highly concentrated and often require careful dilution, hydrosols offer a softer, water-based approach that still carries the beneficial plant properties, without overwhelming your horse or the ecosystem.

The Importance of Organic Ingredients

Choosing certified organic and sustainably produced ingredients isn’t just a luxury — it’s a responsibility. Organic hydrosols and base ingredients are:

INSTRUCTIONS

• Preheat oven to 325℉.

• Whisk in half-and-half, stirring constantly, until mixture simmers. It will begin to thicken quickly. Keep stirring!

• Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the grated cheese, salt, pepper, paprika, and nutmeg to create the Mornay cheese sauce.

• Add in diced turkey and diced tomato. Stir to combine well.

• Place phyllo cups evenly on a baking sheet. Add filling to each cup. Top with bacon crumbles.

• Bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from oven and garnish with chopped chives.

INSTRUCTIONS

• Boil and cool eggs

• Peel the eggs and place them on a paper towel. Slice them in half and gently remove the yolks.
  Place the egg yolks, pimento cheese, sour cream, mustard or horseradish, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and a pinch of salt and pepper in a food processor.

• Blend until smooth, creamy, and mousse-like. If the mixture is too thick, you can drizzle in a drop of juice from the jar of diced pimentos. Stir in the chives or green onion. Taste and season with more salt and pepper if necessary.

• Scoop out the mixture and spoon it into the open egg whites.

• Top with diced pimentos, parsley, and crushed dill potato chips. Serve!

• 3.25 pound strawberries

• 6.5 tablespoons granulated sugar

• 13 ounces heavy whipping cream

• 39 ounces angel food cake (or pound cake)

• 26 (8-ounce) mason jars

• 26 mint sprigs for garnish

Instructions

• Remove stems from strawberries and slice into small pieces

• Place in a large mixing bowl, add sugar. Stir and let sit for 15 minutes.

• Slice the cake and cut into small bite-sized pieces; set aside.

• Add vanilla to the cream & whip

• Put a dollop of whipped cream in the bottom of each mason jar.

• Add a few cake pieces to each mason jar.

• Top with a spoonful or two of strawberry topping.

• Repeat with another layer of whipped cream, more cake and top again with strawberry topping.

• ½ cup granulated sugar

• ½ cup firmly packed brown sugar

• ¼ cup bourbon

• 4 large eggs

• ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

• 2 teaspoons cornmeal

• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

• ½ teaspoon salt

Instructions

• Preheat oven to 325° F. Lightly grease mini muffin pans.

• Using a 2 1/2-inch round cookie cutter, cut out circles of pie crust dough and place in the muffin pans. Spread pecans and chocolate evenly in the bottom of each pie shell.

• In a large saucepan, combine corn syrup, sugar, brown sugar, and bourbon. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

• In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, butter, cornmeal, vanilla, and salt. Gradually whisk about one-fourth of the hot corn syrup mixture into the egg mixture (this will help the eggs from solidifying). Transfer egg mixture to the large saucepan with the remaining hot mixture, whisking constantly.

• Pour two teaspoons of filling into prepared pie crusts, careful not to overfill. Fill about two-thirds full. Once filled, top each pie with a pecan half.

• Bake at 325° for approximately 25 minutes, or until the pies are set and the crust is golden. Cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then remove the pies and cool completely on a wire rack.

The Dressage Collection Fall/Winter 2025-2026

Unfortunately, I missed London Fashion Week this season, where Irish designer Paul Costelloe debuted his equestrian-inspired collection. It is a collection that feels especially relevant for those of us who live in the equestrian world.

His Autumn/Winter 2025 collection was shown at The Waldorf’s Palm Court in central London, which was decorated with large panels depicting freehand sketches of horses.

The tone was set immediately. This was not just fashion. It was equestrian influence brought fully onto the runway.

“I thought I’d resurrect it again because I can use my love for fabrics, Irish and Scottish tweeds, my tailoring, and my culture to some extent,” he says.

He recalls his youth on a small farm in Ireland, where they kept horses.

“I’m bringing my heritage brand Paul Costelloe Dressage to the catwalk this season. I launched it back in the late 80’s as an almost ‘weekend’ collection. It reflects my love of the equestrian sport.”

This year, we are raising a glass to Irish whiskey and a collection of cocktails that feel just a bit more timeless, beginning with the Irish Blonde.

Irish Blonde

Ingredients

• 2 ounces Michael Collins blended Irish whiskey

• 3/4 ounce Grand Marnier

• 1/4 ounce fino sherry

• 1 dash Angostura Orange Bitters

• Garnish: flamed orange peel

Steps

1. Add the blended Irish whiskey, Grand Marnier, fino sherry, and Angostura bitters into a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled.

2. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

3. Garnish with a flamed orange peel.

Irish Maid

The refreshing Irish Maid traces its roots back to the Kentucky Maid, which uses bourbon as its base. Switch bourbon out for Irish whiskey, and voila…the Irish Maid!

Ingredients

• 2 slices of cucumber, cut into quarter-inch slices

• 2 ounces Jameson Irish whiskey

• 1/2 ounce St-Germain elderflower liqueur

• 3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice

• 3/4 ounce simple syrup

• Garnish: cucumber slice

Steps

1. Muddle the cucumber slices in a shaker.

2. Add the Irish whiskey, St-Germain, lemon juice, and simple syrup into a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled.

3. Fine-strain into a chilled rocks glass over fresh ice.

4. Garnish with a cucumber slice.

Frisky Whiskey

Ingredients

• 1 ounce Irish whiskey

• 1 ounce Bärenjäger honey liqueur

• 1 ounce freshly squeezed orange juice

• 1/4 ounce simple syrup

• 2 dashes Angostura bitters

Steps

1. Add the Irish whiskey, Bärenjäger, orange juice, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters into a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled.

2. Double-strain into a highball glass over fresh ice.

Brotherhood

Ingredients

• 1 1/2 ounces Michael Collins blended Irish whiskey

• 3/4 ounce Benedictine

• 3/4 ounce Grand Marnier

• 3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed

• Garnish: lemon peel

Steps

1. Add the Irish whiskey, Benedictine, Grand Marnier, and lemon juice into a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled.

2. Strain into a chilled coupe glass.

3. Twist a swath of lemon peel over the top of the cocktail and drop it into the drink.

Tipperary

Ingredients

• 1 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey

• 1 ounce sweet vermouth

• 1/2 ounce Green Chartreuse

• 2 dashes Angostura bitters

• Garnish: orange twist

Steps

1. Add the Irish whiskey, sweet vermouth, green Chartreuse, and bitters into a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled.

2. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

3. Express the oils from an orange twist over the glass and discard.

Luck of the Irish

Ingredients

• 1 ounce single-malt Irish whiskey

• 1 ounce sweet vermouth

• 1 ounce green Chartreuse

Steps

1. Add all ingredients into a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled.

2. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.

Irish Coffee

The list wouldn’t be complete without it!

Ingredients

• 1 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey

• 2 teaspoons brown sugar

• Hot brewed coffee, to top

• Garnish: whipped cream

Steps

1. Fill an Irish Coffee mug with hot water, let sit for 2 minutes, then discard the water.

2. Add the whiskey and sugar to the heated glass, fill with the coffee, and stir.

3. Top with an inch of unsweetened, lightly whipped cream.

Irish Raktajino

Take it up a notch!

Ingredients

• 1 1/2 ounce Irish whiskey

• 1/2 ounce simple syrup

• 2 ounces espresso (or cold-brew coffee)

• 2 ounces whole milk

• Garnish: smoked paprika

Steps

1. Add all the ingredients to a shaker with ice, then shake vigorously for 15 seconds.

2. Strain into a large snifter.

3. Dust a pinch of smoked paprika over the surface of the drink.

However you choose to celebrate, a well-made drink is always worth the extra effort.

From four-leaf clovers to rabbit’s feet, cultures throughout history have embraced objects believed to bring good fortune. Among these symbols, the horseshoe stands out as one of the most recognizable charms of luck and protection.

March tends to bring the idea of luck to the forefront. With St. Patrick’s Day around the corner and the phrase Luck of the Irish making its annual appearance, it seems like a good time to revisit one of the most enduring symbols of good fortune.

And for those of us who spend our lives around horses, the lucky charm of choice is obvious.

The horseshoe.

But why exactly are horseshoes considered lucky?

The Crescent of the Moon

The precise origin of the lucky horseshoe is difficult to pin down, but one early theory traces the belief back to the eighth-century Chaldeans. They associated the crescent shape of the horseshoe with moon goddesses, symbols believed to protect against the evil eye.

The curved shape, therefore, carried a sacred association. Hanging one above a doorway was thought to shield a home from misfortune.

Even today, the orientation of a horseshoe sparks debate. Some believe the open ends should face upward to “hold” the luck, while others prefer them pointing downward so luck can spill into the home.

(I personally keep mine pointing up.)

The Irish Legend of St. Dunstan

Another well-known explanation connects the horseshoe to Irish folklore.

According to legend, a blacksmith named St. Dunstan, who later became the patron saint of blacksmiths, encountered the Devil one day in the year 969.

There are several variations of the story, but they all share a similar moment. When the Devil asked Dunstan to shoe his hoof, the blacksmith agreed, then nailed the shoe on with such force that the Devil howled in pain.

Desperate for relief, the Devil begged Dunstan to remove it.

Dunstan finally agreed, but only after extracting a promise: the Devil would never enter a place where a horseshoe hung over the door.

From that moment forward, the humble iron horseshoe became a symbol believed to ward off evil.

Iron, Fairies, and Medieval Superstitions

Early Europeans had another reason for trusting horseshoes as protective charms: iron itself.

For centuries, iron was believed to repel evil spirits. Folklore across Western Europe describes mischievous or malicious fairies being unable to cross iron.

Because horseshoes were made from iron, they were believed to carry the same protective power.

The crescent shape reinforced the symbolism. To many early cultures, the moon represented fertility, cycles of nature, and prosperity. Combined with iron’s protective qualities, the horseshoe became a powerful talisman.

During the Middle Ages, when fears of witchcraft spread widely through Europe, the horseshoe gained even more supernatural reputation.

Witches were believed to fear horses and anything associated with them. Just as a crucifix was said to repel vampires, the horseshoe was believed to keep witches away.

The Lucky Number Seven

Traditional horseshoes also carry another symbol of luck: the number seven.

Many horseshoes were made with seven nail holes, and seven has long been considered a naturally fortunate number.

Seven days in a week.
Seven seas.
Seven colors of the rainbow.

And, of course, the seven dwarfs.

It is a fitting coincidence that when we look at the real horse world, we often talk about several common types of horseshoes that serve very different purposes. Farriers choose a style depending on the horse’s conformation, workload, and the terrain it works on.

Here are seven types you might encounter:

1. Keg Horseshoes

The classic U-shaped steel shoe used for many horses with no special hoof issues.

2. Rim Shoe

A shoe with a deeper groove that provides additional traction, useful in speed events where turning and agility matter.

3. Straight Bar Shoe

Often used to stabilize the hoof when dealing with injury or structural weakness.

4. Egg Bar Shoe

An oval extension that provides additional support to the heel area.

5. Heart Bar Shoe

Used for horses suffering from laminitis. It supports the frog, a sensitive structure on the underside of the hoof.

6. Clipped Shoes

Shoes with small tabs that help hold the shoe in place, especially useful for horses that tend to pull shoes off.

7. White Turf Shoes

Special shoes used for winter sports such as snow polo, racing, or skijoring. These may include pads or rims designed to prevent snow buildup and improve traction.

(And yes, these are usually temporary, since some of these setups would be illegal on turf tracks.)

So… Are Horseshoes Actually Lucky?

Whether you believe in folklore or not, the horseshoe has certainly earned its place as one of the world’s most recognizable symbols of good fortune.

Part of that might come from the horse itself.

For thousands of years, horses represented strength, survival, and prosperity. A household that owned horses had mobility, power, and opportunity.

Perhaps the lucky horseshoe is really just a reminder of the animal that carried so much of human history forward.

Either way, if hanging one above the door brings a little extra luck into the barn or the house, I am certainly not going to argue with tradition.

To Shoe or Not to Shoe?

Of course, horseshoes are more than folklore. Now that we’ve explored the lore of the lucky horseshoe, the real horse-person question remains:

Should horses wear them at all?

That’s a conversation worth its own post.

And of course…

The word itself comes from the Norwegian skikjøring, meaning “ski driving.” In its earliest form, it was practical. In snowy Scandinavian countries, skiers were pulled across frozen terrain by reindeer, dogs, and eventually horses. It was transportation before it was competition.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, skiijoring had evolved into competition and even appeared as a demonstration event at the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz. Horses pulling skiers across a frozen lake were no longer just practical…they were thrilling!

When skiijoring made its way to North America, it changed.

The American West reshaped it. Ranch horses replaced carriage horses. Main streets and snow-packed tracks replaced frozen fjords. Western tack, cowboy hats, and speed became defining features. What emerged was something uniquely American: part rodeo, part ski race, entirely winter.

Today’s skiijoring reflects both histories. It carries echoes of its Nordic beginnings while operating as a distinctly American equestrian sport. It rests on the same foundations that built it over a century ago: horsepower, balance, winter, and nerve.

And while Montana and Colorado may have helped popularize modern American skiijoring, they are far from the whole story. The modern landscape of skiijoring stretches much farther than its best-known towns.

A National Circuit Built on Local Traditions

Today, skiijoring events span the country, loosely connected through organizations like Skijor USA, which serves as a central hub for races throughout the winter season.

Rather than a single formal league, skiijoring in the U.S. operates as a constellation of independently run events. Each reflects its own landscape, horse culture, and community.

In the Mountain West, skiijoring feels raw and fast. In the Midwest and New England, events lean into festival energy. In the Pacific Northwest, the sport continues to expand.

Each winter, dozens of events appear on the calendar. A few notable stops across different regions include:

• Chewelah, WA, Feb. 28 & Mar. 1 - One of Washington’s growing skiijoring events, drawing riders, skiers, and spectators from across the region.

Taken together, these events show a discipline that is quietly nationwide. Different accents, different horses, different snow, but the same core requirements: bravery, partnership, and speed.

Skiijor Chic: When Winter Horse Sport Meets the Red Carpet

Spend time along a skiijoring rail, and you will notice something else happening between heats. Layers of shearling and flannel. Felt cowboy hats beside knit beanies. Denim dusted with snow. Belt buckles worn over insulated bibs. Mirrored ski goggles resting on Western collars.

What started as pure practicality has evolved into something recognizable enough to earn its own name: skiijor chic.

And in some places, it has gone a step further.

Certain events on the national calendar, including stops affiliated with Skijor USA, have embraced the cultural crossover through runway-style showcases and red-carpet moments. Spectators and competitors alike step forward to display their winter-meets-Western style, sometimes even judged in friendly competition for best-dressed honors.

Skiijor chic is not costume. It is what happens when working horse culture collides with mountain winter gear, and neither side feels the need to change. Waxed canvas next to down insulation. Cowboy boots planted in snowbanks beside insulated muck boots.

The aesthetic works because it is rooted in function. People dress for wind, snow, and long hours outdoors. The fact that it photographs beautifully is almost accidental.

In a sport built on partnership and nerve, the style that surrounds it carries the same confidence. It says you belong here. Whether you are holding a tow rope, sitting in the saddle, or standing along the rail with a thermos in hand.

A Winter Sport With Staying Power

What makes skiijoring compelling is its honesty. It exists where winter is real, and horses are part of daily life. It asks participants to meet the season on its own terms.

As more communities embrace winter events that celebrate place, partnership, and grit, skiijoring continues to find new ground. Not as a trend, but as a living, working horse sport.

For those willing to stand in the cold and watch closely, skiijoring offers something rare: a winter equestrian sport that feels immediate, physical, and real. It is fast, demanding, and built on partnership, not pageantry. In a season when many horse disciplines slow down, skiijoring reminds us that horsemanship does not hibernate.

George Ford Morris 1873-1960

Born in St. Joseph, Massachusetts, he was mainly self-taught but attended classes at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1888 and later at the Académie Julien in Paris (1925). Concentrating almost solely upon the art of the horse, George Ford Morris frequently contributed to such publications as The American Horseman, Breeder's Gazette, American Field, National Horseman, and Thoroughbred of California. He also illustrated for national publications, including Scribner's and Century magazines.

Winter didn’t end just because the ornaments went back in their box. There are still frozen mornings, more fires to start in the fireplace, and at least three more months where a mug in your hands feels like a survival strategy. This is the stretch of winter that belongs to sleigh rides, not shopping malls. The quiet part.

Sleighs weren’t just for postcards. They were real transportation. Practical, seasonal, and surprisingly social. And those bells were not decorative. They were an early warning system on snowy roads where sound traveled farther than sight. You heard a team coming before you saw them. Bells meant movement. Company. A horse on its way.

The Ginger Bell Mule is named for that moment…

It’s a winter mule that doesn’t shout. It rings.

Instead of citrus bite, it leans into pear. Instead of ice, it melts over snow. Ginger brings warmth, vanilla softens the edges, and star anise lives in the air rather than on the tongue. It changes as you make it and again as you drink it. Familiar mug, fully sensory experience.

In a lot of places, sleigh season does not peak in December. It starts when the snow finally settles in. February. Sometimes March. The kind of winter where roads go quiet and you realize the season is not rushing anywhere.

Back when sleigh rides were everyday winter travel, they were also social events. People held sleigh parties. Groups bundled up, hitched the horses, rang through the countryside, and ended the night with food, music, and long conversations once the horses were settled. The bells were the sound of a night out.

We have updated the tradition. Fewer runners on roads. More boots by the door. Same idea. Cold air, good company, something waiting on the other side of the ride.

The Ginger Bell Mule fits right into that world. It is cold on purpose. The flavors are warm, but the drink stays crisp. It is what you sip by a fire with your coat still on, or in a warm barn while your boots are drying.

Not all winter travel is slow and jingling, either. In some places it involves skis, speed, and a lot more adrenaline. Skijoring has its own culture and very much its own “what are we drinking after this?” energy. We will be talking about that soon.

For now, this one is for the bell ring. The slow ride. The quiet stretch of winter that still has something to say. So do not put away that sleigh just yet! Winter still has places to take you, even if it is only from the door to the couch and back again.

What Is Snow Polo?

It is essentially playing polo on a frozen lake rather than on grass. There are four players on each team. The captain leads the team’s tactics and usually wears number 3. Number 4, also known as back, controls the defense. The other two players are attackers.

In high-goal snow polo, a match will typically consist of four chukkas lasting 7½ minutes each, except for the last one, which is 7 minutes. In any one match, a pony may only be played in a maximum of two, non-consecutive chukkas.

“I’m Ready!”

120 Polo Ponies are brought in from Spain, France, Germany, and England a few days before the tournament to acclimate to the cold. It appears even the stalls are heated.

Snow polo horseshoes are designed to prevent snow from clogging the shoes and to provide traction on slippery surfaces. Rubber pads, cleats, and cogs help the horse move safely. Like snow tires for horses!

1. Standard Play

• Play as regular beer pong, but with the champagne coupes and a snowy theme

• Aim to bounce the orange (like the one used in snow polo) ping pong ball into the cups row

• The team drinks from their Snow Polo Spritz (recipe below) when a cup is sunk, and the water cup is removed.

2. Frozen Cup Rule

• If the ball lands in a frozen cup, it counts for 2 (freeze 4 cups ahead of time and replace them with new ones when your ready to play round 1)

3. Snowflake Re-rack

• Each team gets one re-rack (excluding the goal shot). Once you get down to 7 cups, you can rerack into a snowflake (aka the honeycomb)

4. The Mallet Goal Shot

• Once a team has only two cups left, they can activate the Mallet Goal Shot

• Rearrange the last two cups into a goal shape with space between them

• Instead of throwing, the team must use a mini polo mallet to hit the ball through the goal to win the game instantly

No horse breed represents Christmas more than the Clydesdale! Maybe it’s because of the wonderful Budweiser commercials we’ve all enjoyed over the years, or their beauty as they pull wagons bearing gifts of the holiday season that delight us!

All About Clydesdales

The Clydesdale horse was originally developed in Scotland, in the Clyde valley after which they are named. Flemish stallions were imported to mate with local draft mares in the 18th century, with the first use of the word “Clydesdale” as a horse breed recorded in 1826. After this, Shire blood was introduced in the 19th century; and a breed society was introduced in 1877. They were then exported to Australia, New Zealand, and America during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Hard Working Horses

They were used primarily for farm work…

and to work on World Wars l and ll battlefields, where the breed experienced heavy losses. By the 1970s the Clydesdale horse breed found itself listed as “At Risk” with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust – a status which endures to this day and means that there are fewer than 1500 breeding mares of the Clydesdale horse breed.

Vital Statistics

The Clydesdale stands 16 to 18 hands, with the average being 16.2, and weighs 1,500 -2,200 pounds. The biggest Clydesdale on record is Remington from the USA, who measured 20 hands in 2009 and was once the tallest living horse in the world. Clydesdales generally live to be 25 to 30 years old.

Wistljacket – George Stubbs 1762

George Stubbs was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learned his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century, such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs’ output includes historical paintings, but his greatest skill was painting animals. He painted some of the earliest known depictions of Thoroughbred racehorses. His most famous portrait, “Wistljacket,” the Marquess of Rockingham‘s racehorse, was acquired by the National Gallery in London for 11 million pounds.

A Scientist As Well As An Artist

One of the most interesting things about Stubbs was his intricate knowledge of horse anatomy. Stubbs’s knowledge of equine physiology was unsurpassed by any painter; he had studied anatomy at York and, from 1756, he spent 18 months in Lincolnshire, where he carried out dissections and experiments on dead horses to understand the animal’s physiology better. He suspended the cadavers with block and tackle to be better able to sketch them in different positions. The careful notes and drawings he made during his studies were published in 1766 in The Anatomy of the Horse. Considered a groundbreaking scientific work, it’s still referenced today.

First published in 1766, Stubbs’s work was based on numerous dissections, a practice far from generally accepted in his century. Stubbs’ horses, shown in this edition on 36 large plates, are memorable for their uncanny life-like quality, nobility, and extreme anatomical precision. In this systematic study, Stubbs depicts the horse in three positions ― side, front, and back. He first presents the skeleton alone in each of these three positions, then devotes five studies to each position, covering layers of muscles, fascia, ligaments, nerves, arteries, veins, glands, and cartilage.

The Age Of Romanticism

Stubbs was a proponent of the Romantic Movement, an artistic and intellectual movement that originated in Europe towards the end of the 18th century. The purpose of the movement was to emphasize subjectivity, imagination, and appreciation of nature in society and culture in response to the Age of Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution.

A Horse Frightened By A Lion

The painting “A Horse Frightened By A Lion” is a perfect example of Stubbs in the Age of Romanticism. Romantic artists often sought to capture the moods, feelings, and emotions of their subjects, using expressive compositions, vivid colors, and dramatic contrasts of light and dark. Nature was another important theme in Romantic art, with many artists exploring the beauty and power of the natural world.

Although horses were Stubbs’s favorite subjects, he did other paintings as well, but most included animals in some way.

The Kongouro from New Holland, 1772

The Kongouro from New Holland is an oil painting depicting a kangaroo. It is the first painting of an Australian animal in Western art, along with Portrait of a Large Dog, a painting of a dingo.

The Pirate King… chose a different aesthetic.

When it was time to prepare for a hunt day, he presented himself looking like he’d journeyed through Middle-earth, rolled through the Shire, and taken a nap in Fangorn Forest for good measure. Mud, leaves, twigs — a full “woodland wanderer on the run” look.

Just emerged from the Misty Mountains, apparently.

The Bathing Quest (And the Tools Worthy of It)

Bathing a Gypsy Vanner for the hunt field is no casual rinse — it is a Quest. And like any proper quest, a fellowship was required… because detangling the Pirate’s tail is a task best faced with allies. (Thanks, Marcy!)

Return of the King

After several hours and plenty of treat-based negotiation (like a hobbit, he’s highly motivated by snacks), the Pirate King’s true form emerged — a handsome, majestic, foxhunting-ready steed with just a hint of unruly charm… the kind that suggests he might still lead a raid after tea.

Fit for polite hunting society once more.

By the end, he no longer resembled a scruffy traveling companion of a Dwarf.

Instead, he looked like a horse one could respectfully present in the hunt field — polished, fluffy, and almost refined; the sort of steed who could carry a rider across RRH country…

…or accompany the Elves on an epic journey.

A Touch of Middle-earth Magic

A scene from The Hobbit immediately came to mind during his transformation — the one with the majestic, feather-footed ponies that appear to be Gypsy Vanners. Middle-earth knows a good horse when it sees one.

Cousins of Pirate, no doubt.

As he stepped out polished and proud, he carried himself with a noble flair worthy of the Riders of Rohan — riding out with hounds…

…rather than war cries.

Will this transformation last?
Probably until he finds the next available mud patch… which, knowing him, is never far away!
