• Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the grated cheese, salt, pepper, paprika, and nutmeg to create the Mornay cheese sauce.

INSTRUCTIONS

• Boil and cool eggs

• Peel the eggs and place them on a paper towel. Slice them in half and gently remove the yolks.
  Place the egg yolks, pimento cheese, sour cream, mustard or horseradish, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and a pinch of salt and pepper in a food processor.

• Blend until smooth, creamy, and mousse-like. If the mixture is too thick, you can drizzle in a drop of juice from the jar of diced pimentos. Stir in the chives or green onion. Taste and season with more salt and pepper if necessary.

• Scoop out the mixture and spoon it into the open egg whites.

• Top with diced pimentos, parsley, and crushed dill potato chips. Serve!

Instructions

• ½ cup firmly packed brown sugar

• ¼ cup bourbon

• 4 large eggs

• ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

• 2 teaspoons cornmeal

• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

• ½ teaspoon salt

Instructions

• Preheat oven to 325° F. Lightly grease mini muffin pans.

• Using a 2 1/2-inch round cookie cutter, cut out circles of pie crust dough and place in the muffin pans. Spread pecans and chocolate evenly in the bottom of each pie shell.

• In a large saucepan, combine corn syrup, sugar, brown sugar, and bourbon. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

• In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, butter, cornmeal, vanilla, and salt. Gradually whisk about one-fourth of the hot corn syrup mixture into the egg mixture (this will help the eggs from solidifying). Transfer egg mixture to the large saucepan with the remaining hot mixture, whisking constantly.

• Pour two teaspoons of filling into prepared pie crusts, careful not to overfill. Fill about two-thirds full. Once filled, top each pie with a pecan half.

• Bake at 325° for approximately 25 minutes, or until the pies are set and the crust is golden. Cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then remove the pies and cool completely on a wire rack.

The Dressage Collection Fall/Winter 2025-2026

Unfortunately, I missed London Fashion Week this season, where Irish designer Paul Costelloe debuted his equestrian-inspired collection. It is a collection that feels especially relevant for those of us who live in the equestrian world.

His Autumn/Winter 2025 collection was shown at The Waldorf’s Palm Court in central London, which was decorated with large panels depicting freehand sketches of horses.

The tone was set immediately. This was not just fashion. It was equestrian influence brought fully onto the runway.

“I thought I’d resurrect it again because I can use my love for fabrics, Irish and Scottish tweeds, my tailoring, and my culture to some extent,” he says.

He recalls his youth on a small farm in Ireland, where they kept horses.

“I’m bringing my heritage brand Paul Costelloe Dressage to the catwalk this season. I launched it back in the late 80’s as an almost ‘weekend’ collection. It reflects my love of the equestrian sport.”

Maybe that is still de rigueur in some places, but here at The Equestrian Epicurean, we are a more refined approach.

This year, we are raising a glass to Irish whiskey and a collection of cocktails that feel just a bit more timeless, beginning with the Irish Blonde.

Irish Blonde

Ingredients

• 2 ounces Michael Collins blended Irish whiskey

• 3/4 ounce Grand Marnier

• 1/4 ounce fino sherry

• 1 dash Angostura Orange Bitters

• Garnish: flamed orange peel

Steps

1. Add the blended Irish whiskey, Grand Marnier, fino sherry, and Angostura bitters into a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled.

2. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

3. Garnish with a flamed orange peel.

Irish Maid

The refreshing Irish Maid traces its roots back to the Kentucky Maid, which uses bourbon as its base. Switch bourbon out for Irish whiskey, and voila…the Irish Maid!

Ingredients

• 2 slices of cucumber, cut into quarter-inch slices

• 2 ounces Jameson Irish whiskey

• 1/2 ounce St-Germain elderflower liqueur

• 3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice

• 3/4 ounce simple syrup

• Garnish: cucumber slice

Steps

1. Muddle the cucumber slices in a shaker.

2. Add the Irish whiskey, St-Germain, lemon juice, and simple syrup into a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled.

3. Fine-strain into a chilled rocks glass over fresh ice.

4. Garnish with a cucumber slice.

Frisky Whiskey

Ingredients

• 1 ounce Irish whiskey

• 1 ounce Bärenjäger honey liqueur

• 1 ounce freshly squeezed orange juice

• 1/4 ounce simple syrup

• 2 dashes Angostura bitters

Steps

1. Add the Irish whiskey, Bärenjäger, orange juice, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters into a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled.

2. Double-strain into a highball glass over fresh ice.

Brotherhood

Ingredients

• 1 1/2 ounces Michael Collins blended Irish whiskey

• 3/4 ounce Benedictine

• 3/4 ounce Grand Marnier

• 3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed

• Garnish: lemon peel

Steps

1. Add the Irish whiskey, Benedictine, Grand Marnier, and lemon juice into a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled.

2. Strain into a chilled coupe glass.

3. Twist a swath of lemon peel over the top of the cocktail and drop it into the drink.

Tipperary

Ingredients

• 1 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey

• 1 ounce sweet vermouth

• 1/2 ounce Green Chartreuse

• 2 dashes Angostura bitters

• Garnish: orange twist

Steps

1. Add the Irish whiskey, sweet vermouth, green Chartreuse, and bitters into a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled.

2. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

3. Express the oils from an orange twist over the glass and discard.

Luck of the Irish

Ingredients

• 1 ounce single-malt Irish whiskey

• 1 ounce sweet vermouth

• 1 ounce green Chartreuse

Steps

1. Add all ingredients into a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled.

2. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.

Irish Coffee

The list wouldn’t be complete without it!

Ingredients

• 1 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey

• 2 teaspoons brown sugar

• Hot brewed coffee, to top

• Garnish: whipped cream

Steps

1. Fill an Irish Coffee mug with hot water, let sit for 2 minutes, then discard the water.

2. Add the whiskey and sugar to the heated glass, fill with the coffee, and stir.

3. Top with an inch of unsweetened, lightly whipped cream.

Irish Raktajino

Take it up a notch!

Ingredients

• 1 1/2 ounce Irish whiskey

• 1/2 ounce simple syrup

• 2 ounces espresso (or cold-brew coffee)

• 2 ounces whole milk

• Garnish: smoked paprika

Steps

1. Add all the ingredients to a shaker with ice, then shake vigorously for 15 seconds.

2. Strain into a large snifter.

3. Dust a pinch of smoked paprika over the surface of the drink.

However you choose to celebrate, a well-made drink is always worth the extra effort.

From four-leaf clovers to rabbit’s feet, cultures throughout history have embraced objects believed to bring good fortune. Among these symbols, the horseshoe stands out as one of the most recognizable charms of luck and protection.

March tends to bring the idea of luck to the forefront. With St. Patrick’s Day around the corner and the phrase Luck of the Irish making its annual appearance, it seems like a good time to revisit one of the most enduring symbols of good fortune.

And for those of us who spend our lives around horses, the lucky charm of choice is obvious.

The horseshoe.

But why exactly are horseshoes considered lucky?

The Crescent of the Moon

The precise origin of the lucky horseshoe is difficult to pin down, but one early theory traces the belief back to the eighth-century Chaldeans. They associated the crescent shape of the horseshoe with moon goddesses, symbols believed to protect against the evil eye.

The curved shape, therefore, carried a sacred association. Hanging one above a doorway was thought to shield a home from misfortune.

Even today, the orientation of a horseshoe sparks debate. Some believe the open ends should face upward to “hold” the luck, while others prefer them pointing downward so luck can spill into the home.

(I personally keep mine pointing up.)

The Irish Legend of St. Dunstan

Another well-known explanation connects the horseshoe to Irish folklore.

According to legend, a blacksmith named St. Dunstan, who later became the patron saint of blacksmiths, encountered the Devil one day in the year 969.

There are several variations of the story, but they all share a similar moment. When the Devil asked Dunstan to shoe his hoof, the blacksmith agreed, then nailed the shoe on with such force that the Devil howled in pain.

Desperate for relief, the Devil begged Dunstan to remove it.

Dunstan finally agreed, but only after extracting a promise: the Devil would never enter a place where a horseshoe hung over the door.

From that moment forward, the humble iron horseshoe became a symbol believed to ward off evil.

Iron, Fairies, and Medieval Superstitions

Early Europeans had another reason for trusting horseshoes as protective charms: iron itself.

For centuries, iron was believed to repel evil spirits. Folklore across Western Europe describes mischievous or malicious fairies being unable to cross iron.

Because horseshoes were made from iron, they were believed to carry the same protective power.

The crescent shape reinforced the symbolism. To many early cultures, the moon represented fertility, cycles of nature, and prosperity. Combined with iron’s protective qualities, the horseshoe became a powerful talisman.

During the Middle Ages, when fears of witchcraft spread widely through Europe, the horseshoe gained even more supernatural reputation.

Witches were believed to fear horses and anything associated with them. Just as a crucifix was said to repel vampires, the horseshoe was believed to keep witches away.

The Lucky Number Seven

Traditional horseshoes also carry another symbol of luck: the number seven.

Many horseshoes were made with seven nail holes, and seven has long been considered a naturally fortunate number.

Seven days in a week.
Seven seas.
Seven colors of the rainbow.

And, of course, the seven dwarfs.

7 Types Of Horseshoes

It is a fitting coincidence that when we look at the real horse world, we often talk about several common types of horseshoes that serve very different purposes. Farriers choose a style depending on the horse’s conformation, workload, and the terrain it works on.

Here are seven types you might encounter:

1. Keg Horseshoes

The classic U-shaped steel shoe used for many horses with no special hoof issues.

2. Rim Shoe

A shoe with a deeper groove that provides additional traction, useful in speed events where turning and agility matter.

3. Straight Bar Shoe

Often used to stabilize the hoof when dealing with injury or structural weakness.

4. Egg Bar Shoe

An oval extension that provides additional support to the heel area.

5. Heart Bar Shoe

Used for horses suffering from laminitis. It supports the frog, a sensitive structure on the underside of the hoof.

6. Clipped Shoes

Shoes with small tabs that help hold the shoe in place, especially useful for horses that tend to pull shoes off.

7. White Turf Shoes

Special shoes used for winter sports such as snow polo, racing, or skijoring. These may include pads or rims designed to prevent snow buildup and improve traction.

(And yes, these are usually temporary, since some of these setups would be illegal on turf tracks.)

So… Are Horseshoes Actually Lucky?

Whether you believe in folklore or not, the horseshoe has certainly earned its place as one of the world’s most recognizable symbols of good fortune.

Part of that might come from the horse itself.

For thousands of years, horses represented strength, survival, and prosperity. A household that owned horses had mobility, power, and opportunity.

Perhaps the lucky horseshoe is really just a reminder of the animal that carried so much of human history forward.

Either way, if hanging one above the door brings a little extra luck into the barn or the house, I am certainly not going to argue with tradition.

To Shoe or Not to Shoe?

Of course, horseshoes are more than folklore. Now that we’ve explored the lore of the lucky horseshoe, the real horse-person question remains:

Should horses wear them at all?

That’s a conversation worth its own post.

The word itself comes from the Norwegian skikjøring, meaning “ski driving.” In its earliest form, it was practical. In snowy Scandinavian countries, skiers were pulled across frozen terrain by reindeer, dogs, and eventually horses. It was transportation before it was competition.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, skiijoring had evolved into competition and even appeared as a demonstration event at the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz. Horses pulling skiers across a frozen lake were no longer just practical…they were thrilling!

When skiijoring made its way to North America, it changed.

The American West reshaped it. Ranch horses replaced carriage horses. Main streets and snow-packed tracks replaced frozen fjords. Western tack, cowboy hats, and speed became defining features. What emerged was something uniquely American: part rodeo, part ski race, entirely winter.

Today’s skiijoring reflects both histories. It carries echoes of its Nordic beginnings while operating as a distinctly American equestrian sport. It rests on the same foundations that built it over a century ago: horsepower, balance, winter, and nerve.

And while Montana and Colorado may have helped popularize modern American skiijoring, they are far from the whole story. The modern landscape of skiijoring stretches much farther than its best-known towns.

A National Circuit Built on Local Traditions

Today, skiijoring events span the country, loosely connected through organizations like Skijor USA, which serves as a central hub for races throughout the winter season.

Rather than a single formal league, skiijoring in the U.S. operates as a constellation of independently run events. Each reflects its own landscape, horse culture, and community.

In the Mountain West, skiijoring feels raw and fast. In the Midwest and New England, events lean into festival energy. In the Pacific Northwest, the sport continues to expand.

Each winter, dozens of events appear on the calendar. A few notable stops across different regions include:

• Chewelah, WA, Feb. 28 & Mar. 1 - One of Washington’s growing skiijoring events, drawing riders, skiers, and spectators from across the region.

Taken together, these events show a discipline that is quietly nationwide. Different accents, different horses, different snow, but the same core requirements: bravery, partnership, and speed.

Skiijor Chic: When Winter Horse Sport Meets the Red Carpet

Spend time along a skiijoring rail, and you will notice something else happening between heats. Layers of shearling and flannel. Felt cowboy hats beside knit beanies. Denim dusted with snow. Belt buckles worn over insulated bibs. Mirrored ski goggles resting on Western collars.

What started as pure practicality has evolved into something recognizable enough to earn its own name: skiijor chic.

And in some places, it has gone a step further.

Certain events on the national calendar, including stops affiliated with Skijor USA, have embraced the cultural crossover through runway-style showcases and red-carpet moments. Spectators and competitors alike step forward to display their winter-meets-Western style, sometimes even judged in friendly competition for best-dressed honors.

Skiijor chic is not costume. It is what happens when working horse culture collides with mountain winter gear, and neither side feels the need to change. Waxed canvas next to down insulation. Cowboy boots planted in snowbanks beside insulated muck boots.

The aesthetic works because it is rooted in function. People dress for wind, snow, and long hours outdoors. The fact that it photographs beautifully is almost accidental.

In a sport built on partnership and nerve, the style that surrounds it carries the same confidence. It says you belong here. Whether you are holding a tow rope, sitting in the saddle, or standing along the rail with a thermos in hand.

A Winter Sport With Staying Power

What makes skiijoring compelling is its honesty. It exists where winter is real, and horses are part of daily life. It asks participants to meet the season on its own terms.

As more communities embrace winter events that celebrate place, partnership, and grit, skiijoring continues to find new ground. Not as a trend, but as a living, working horse sport.

For those willing to stand in the cold and watch closely, skiijoring offers something rare: a winter equestrian sport that feels immediate, physical, and real. It is fast, demanding, and built on partnership, not pageantry. In a season when many horse disciplines slow down, skiijoring reminds us that horsemanship does not hibernate.

Born in St. Joseph, Massachusetts, he was mainly self-taught but attended classes at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1888 and later at the Académie Julien in Paris (1925). Concentrating almost solely upon the art of the horse, George Ford Morris frequently contributed to such publications as The American Horseman, Breeder's Gazette, American Field, National Horseman, and Thoroughbred of California. He also illustrated for national publications, including Scribner's and Century magazines.

They were an early warning system on snowy roads where sound traveled farther than sight. You heard a team coming before you saw them. Bells meant movement. Company. A horse on its way.

The Ginger Bell Mule is named for that moment…

It’s a winter mule that doesn’t shout. It rings.

Instead of citrus bite, it leans into pear. Instead of ice, it melts over snow. Ginger brings warmth, vanilla softens the edges, and star anise lives in the air rather than on the tongue. It changes as you make it and again as you drink it. Familiar mug, fully sensory experience.

In a lot of places, sleigh season does not peak in December. It starts when the snow finally settles in. February. Sometimes March. The kind of winter where roads go quiet and you realize the season is not rushing anywhere.

Back when sleigh rides were everyday winter travel, they were also social events. People held sleigh parties. Groups bundled up, hitched the horses, rang through the countryside, and ended the night with food, music, and long conversations once the horses were settled. The bells were the sound of a night out.

We have updated the tradition. Fewer runners on roads. More boots by the door. Same idea. Cold air, good company, something waiting on the other side of the ride.

The Ginger Bell Mule fits right into that world. It is cold on purpose. The flavors are warm, but the drink stays crisp. It is what you sip by a fire with your coat still on, or in a warm barn while your boots are drying.

Not all winter travel is slow and jingling, either. In some places it involves skis, speed, and a lot more adrenaline. Skijoring has its own culture and very much its own “what are we drinking after this?” energy. We will be talking about that soon.

For now, this one is for the bell ring. The slow ride. The quiet stretch of winter that still has something to say. So do not put away that sleigh just yet! Winter still has places to take you, even if it is only from the door to the couch and back again.

What Is Snow Polo?

It is essentially playing polo on a frozen lake rather than on grass. There are four players on each team. The captain leads the team’s tactics and usually wears number 3. Number 4, also known as back, controls the defense. The other two players are attackers.

In high-goal snow polo, a match will typically consist of four chukkas lasting 7½ minutes each, except for the last one, which is 7 minutes. In any one match, a pony may only be played in a maximum of two, non-consecutive chukkas.

“I’m Ready!”

120 Polo Ponies are brought in from Spain, France, Germany, and England a few days before the tournament to acclimate to the cold. It appears even the stalls are heated.

Snow polo horseshoes are designed to prevent snow from clogging the shoes and to provide traction on slippery surfaces. Rubber pads, cleats, and cogs help the horse move safely. Like snow tires for horses!

This makes sense. It’s a ball you can see in the snow!

Rules & Gameplay

1. Standard Play

• Play as regular beer pong, but with the champagne coupes and a snowy theme

• Aim to bounce the orange (like the one used in snow polo) ping pong ball into the cups row

• The team drinks from their Snow Polo Spritz (recipe below) when a cup is sunk, and the water cup is removed.

2. Frozen Cup Rule

• If the ball lands in a frozen cup, it counts for 2 (freeze 4 cups ahead of time and replace them with new ones when your ready to play round 1)

3. Snowflake Re-rack

• Each team gets one re-rack (excluding the goal shot). Once you get down to 7 cups, you can rerack into a snowflake (aka the honeycomb)

4. The Mallet Goal Shot

• Once a team has only two cups left, they can activate the Mallet Goal Shot

• Rearrange the last two cups into a goal shape with space between them

• Instead of throwing, the team must use a mini polo mallet to hit the ball through the goal to win the game instantly

Champagne • Pear • Amaro Nonino • Winter Elegance

• 3 oz Champagne (brut/dry for crispness)

• 1 oz White Pear Juice (cloudy works too, but clear looks sleeker)

No horse breed represents Christmas more than the Clydesdale! Maybe it’s because of the wonderful Budweiser commercials we’ve all enjoyed over the years, or their beauty as they pull wagons bearing gifts of the holiday season that delight us!

All About Clydesdales

The Clydesdale horse was originally developed in Scotland, in the Clyde valley after which they are named. Flemish stallions were imported to mate with local draft mares in the 18th century, with the first use of the word “Clydesdale” as a horse breed recorded in 1826. After this, Shire blood was introduced in the 19th century; and a breed society was introduced in 1877. They were then exported to Australia, New Zealand, and America during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Hard Working Horses

They were used primarily for farm work…

and to work on World Wars l and ll battlefields, where the breed experienced heavy losses. By the 1970s the Clydesdale horse breed found itself listed as “At Risk” with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust – a status which endures to this day and means that there are fewer than 1500 breeding mares of the Clydesdale horse breed.

Vital Statistics

The Clydesdale stands 16 to 18 hands, with the average being 16.2, and weighs 1,500 -2,200 pounds. The biggest Clydesdale on record is Remington from the USA, who measured 20 hands in 2009 and was once the tallest living horse in the world. Clydesdales generally live to be 25 to 30 years old.

Wistljacket – George Stubbs 1762

George Stubbs was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learned his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century, such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs’ output includes historical paintings, but his greatest skill was painting animals. He painted some of the earliest known depictions of Thoroughbred racehorses. His most famous portrait, “Wistljacket,” the Marquess of Rockingham‘s racehorse, was acquired by the National Gallery in London for 11 million pounds.

A Scientist As Well As An Artist

One of the most interesting things about Stubbs was his intricate knowledge of horse anatomy. Stubbs’s knowledge of equine physiology was unsurpassed by any painter; he had studied anatomy at York and, from 1756, he spent 18 months in Lincolnshire, where he carried out dissections and experiments on dead horses to understand the animal’s physiology better. He suspended the cadavers with block and tackle to be better able to sketch them in different positions. The careful notes and drawings he made during his studies were published in 1766 in The Anatomy of the Horse. Considered a groundbreaking scientific work, it’s still referenced today.

First published in 1766, Stubbs’s work was based on numerous dissections, a practice far from generally accepted in his century. Stubbs’ horses, shown in this edition on 36 large plates, are memorable for their uncanny life-like quality, nobility, and extreme anatomical precision. In this systematic study, Stubbs depicts the horse in three positions ― side, front, and back. He first presents the skeleton alone in each of these three positions, then devotes five studies to each position, covering layers of muscles, fascia, ligaments, nerves, arteries, veins, glands, and cartilage.

The Age Of Romanticism

Stubbs was a proponent of the Romantic Movement, an artistic and intellectual movement that originated in Europe towards the end of the 18th century. The purpose of the movement was to emphasize subjectivity, imagination, and appreciation of nature in society and culture in response to the Age of Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution.

A Horse Frightened By A Lion

The painting “A Horse Frightened By A Lion” is a perfect example of Stubbs in the Age of Romanticism. Romantic artists often sought to capture the moods, feelings, and emotions of their subjects, using expressive compositions, vivid colors, and dramatic contrasts of light and dark. Nature was another important theme in Romantic art, with many artists exploring the beauty and power of the natural world.

Although horses were Stubbs’s favorite subjects, he did other paintings as well, but most included animals in some way.

The Kongouro from New Holland is an oil painting depicting a kangaroo. It is the first painting of an Australian animal in Western art, along with Portrait of a Large Dog, a painting of a dingo.

When it was time to prepare for a hunt day, he presented himself looking like he’d journeyed through Middle-earth, rolled through the Shire, and taken a nap in Fangorn Forest for good measure. Mud, leaves, twigs — a full “woodland wanderer on the run” look.

Just emerged from the Misty Mountains, apparently.

The Bathing Quest (And the Tools Worthy of It)

Bathing a Gypsy Vanner for the hunt field is no casual rinse — it is a Quest. And like any proper quest, a fellowship was required… because detangling the Pirate’s tail is a task best faced with allies. (Thanks, Marcy!)

Return of the King

After several hours and plenty of treat-based negotiation (like a hobbit, he’s highly motivated by snacks), the Pirate King’s true form emerged — a handsome, majestic, foxhunting-ready steed with just a hint of unruly charm… the kind that suggests he might still lead a raid after tea.

Fit for polite hunting society once more.

By the end, he no longer resembled a scruffy traveling companion of a Dwarf.

Instead, he looked like a horse one could respectfully present in the hunt field — polished, fluffy, and almost refined; the sort of steed who could carry a rider across RRH country…

…or accompany the Elves on an epic journey.

A Touch of Middle-earth Magic

A scene from The Hobbit immediately came to mind during his transformation — the one with the majestic, feather-footed ponies that appear to be Gypsy Vanners. Middle-earth knows a good horse when it sees one.

Cousins of Pirate, no doubt.

As he stepped out polished and proud, he carried himself with a noble flair worthy of the Riders of Rohan — riding out with hounds…

…rather than war cries.

Will this transformation last?
Probably until he finds the next available mud patch… which, knowing him, is never far away!

Meet Henry! He’s my beautiful Siberian cat, and my writing partner. I am currently writing the fourth book in The Ivy Snow Mystery Series, and Henry is by my side (and sometimes on my keyboard, as I write!)

The working title for the book is The Breaking Maiden Murder. When protagonist, Ivy Snow, a former Olympic rider, inherits a racehorse bound for the Kentucky Derby, what she finds in the Bluegrass is more than she bargained for. Thoughts on Shoeing Your Horse

Just the other day, while Pirate and Denver were being trimmed I was talking to my trainer about putting shoes back on my Saddlebred, Denver. For most of his life, Denver wore shoes year-round. In addition to ring work, we went trail riding, and participated in a hunter pace or two. A few years ago, I started giving him a break from shoes during the winter months. I’m mostly a fair weather rider, so I thought he would enjoy being “foot loose and fancy free.” Well… as things seemed to be going okay, I refrained from putting shoes back on him at all. He’s been shoe-less now for several years.

The only downside that I’ve noticed is a tendency for him to be a little “ouchy” on gravel roads. Interestingly enough the smaller stones seem to bother him more than the larger ones. Since I’ve decided to increase my time on the trail this year, I’ve been considering whether I not to have him shod.

Pirate, who is a Gypsy Vanner, has the rock solid hooves of a draft breed. He has never worn shoes &  I’ve taken him fox hunting over some pretty rough terrain here in the mountains of Western Pennsylvania. He did just great with all of it, but I did notice that just like Denver, he is a little “ouchy” on roads with small stones. Last year, I decided to shoe Pirate on the fronts. 

Horses wearing shoes creates difficulty…as we all know. They come off or loose at the most inconvenient times. It’s not always possible to get a farrier out when you need them…even if they’re on speed dial! 

Horse’s feet are meant to flex, in order to absorb the concussion of landing, and are also designed to slide a little before gripping, to protect the bones of the foot and the more precious bones and ligaments above.

And without shoes, there’s the benefit of the horse’s own natural gripping mechanism. The horse’s hoof is beautifully designed to function on all surfaces when healthy. A concave sole with a pointed toe allows the foot to dig in for extra lift. The fully developed spongy frog provides grip, slows the sliding and acts as a cushion shock absorb-er, a bit like Nike Airs, that also helps to pump blood back up the limb. 

Keeping ridden horses barefoot also ensures that they have the benefit of optimal proprioception when we humans are on board.  Proprioception is ‘the perception of awareness of the position and movement of the body’, and a key component of the information required for the horse, or any animal, is the ability to feel the ground beneath their feet. The ability to access and use that information to adjust to uneven or challenging terrain is an essential part of balance and of healthy movement.  Our human shoes are mostly supple and flex with our feet; horseshoes generally are not. I often think being shod must feel like being permanently stuck ski boots with a completely rigid sole that does not flex at all.

And can you remember how cold your feet get in ski boots, or even in wellies, in winter? That feeling when your feet are like blocks of ice, solid lumps with no fine touch sensation and it’s difficult to wriggle your toes? And you feel like you are walking on chunks of solid flesh rather than a fully functioning foot? That feeling is caused by impaired circulation; in the cold the blood flow to our extremities is reduced to prevent us losing excessive heat from those areas. The foot goes numb, and is less functional.

Thermal imaging allows us to compare the temperature difference, and therefore blood flow, between a shod foot and a barefoot hoof.

Immobility leads to impaired circulation. When your feet are cold you wiggle your toes to get the blood going; likewise a functioning equine foot flexes and contracts as it contacts the ground, pushing the blood around the hoof and limb.

The horn is still a living substance, more solid than our foot but certainly not rigid as we are led to believe.

What do steel horseshoes do? The rigidity of the steel limits the natural flexion of the foot, converting a conformable, dynamic structure into a fixed, immobilized structure. The nails and the tightness of the shoe impair circulation; even if the shoes are beautifully fitted to the hoof on day one of the shoeing cycle, as the hoof grows, the shoe and the nails become restrictive. Just observe how much the hoof grows out of shoes during your winter shoeing break compare to how slowly it grows in between shoeing cycles.

The impaired circulation from restrictive shoeing mimics chilled toes; the horse therefore suffers from impaired proprioception, both from cold feet and from being deprived of crucial mechanical contact between the sole of the foot and the ground.

In a healthy foot, the frogs act as extra pumps, moving blood around the foot and back up the limb, and also acting as a hydro-static shock absorption mechanism. A cadaver model has actually shown that a barefoot hoof absorbs nearly ALL the concussion created by landing the limb, and therefore very little force is transmitted further up the limb, minimizing damage and wear on the rest of the joints.

Another interesting fact is that steel horseshoes vibrate at the exact same frequency that causes the industrial injury “vibration white finger” in humans. It’s a frequency that causes necrosis or tissue death. Not all shoes do this- Cytek and other plastic shoes don’t have this effect, nor do aluminium racing plates. But steel horseshoes do.

My first horse, “Wimsey” had a propensity to overreach with his hind foot and pull off his front shoes. This led to hoof damage, and countless rounds of experimenting with different shoes and trimming. We finally found the answer in aluminum shoes! I have no experience with plastic shoes, but they may be a good alternative.

What are the disadvantages of keeping ridden horses barefoot? The main problem that I have observed is that we get instant feedback about how fit, well and sound our horses are.

Keeping ridden horses barefoot gives us really accurate information about our horse’s fitness to work.

When keeping the ridden horse barefoot, we also get instant feedback about our horse’s general health. Event lines in the horn of the hoof document times of metabolic challenge. You will see a line for each dose of wormer, each vaccination, every flush of grass. If you’ve moved yards, or if your horse has had an injury, or another reason for a period of stress, there will be a ripple visible.

Is the horse footy on stones? Mostly it will have had too much sugar in its diet, or have a pro- inflammatory process going on.

Diet Makes a Difference For Every Horse!

Both Denver and Pirate are “footy” on stones. A little too much sugar in the diet? Well, they have both been getting less treats since last summer, so we’ll see if that makes any difference this year!

So the main disadvantage of keeping ridden horses barefoot is that you will inevitably become much more in tune with your horse’s body. Once you start listening and observing, I warn you now, not all the information is welcome. You may have to adjust your plans and ambitions to fit in with the horse’s schedule, their current capabilities. Your ego may have to step aside. You may have to train at their rate. You may have to learn new skills, such as a little light hoof trimming. You may have to become a feed geek, or a grass geek , or get a whole degree’s worth of knowledge from bitter experience!

Feet reflect both what’s going on inside the horse and also above in the system.

If the horse has funny looking feet, it’s likely because it needs funny looking feet, or because, at this moment, it can only grow funny looking feet. Fix the diet, treat the whole horse, allow and correct the movement, and beautiful feet will grow.

If you are not yet ready to not shoe, do please burn this image on your brain. And give those feet a good long shoeing break every year, to keep the feet looking more like the healthy foot on the left of the picture than the right.

Educate yourself. Turn into a hoof geek. And a horse health geek. Ask questions. Be honest with yourself- what do you see when you look at your horse’s feet?

And remember- no foot no horse.

Or as I like to say…”No Hoof-No Horse”  I’m all about alliteration!

“Are you still riding?” the silver-haired woman asked me.

I’ve had to get used to this question instead of just bristling with incredulity and giving a facetious answer such as, “And do what? Sit home and knit?” 

I’ve been riding since my father got me a pony when I was nine and had pestered him for one from the time I could speak.

It has taken time to accept that although I not only ride, but drive, jump and splash horses in various bodies of water when available, I look older than I feel or live. A life of riding—well before sunblock, before helmets and, later, hats—has resulted in a youthful body but a face that sometimes prompts people to ask if my mother is my sister. (She’s 99, didn’t ride and took better care of her skin).

So, I answered civilly that yes, I was, and that I intend to ride as long as I breathe. 

“And what about you? “

“I had to let go of my horse three years ago,” said the woman, who told me her name was Chris. We were both at a horse expo where I was selling my new book about the bond between women and horses. Chris was there, why? Maybe to get a sniff of the love she had forsaken.

We compared ages. I was a bit older, but not by much. 

“And how do you feel now—without a horse?” I asked, plunging right into one of the most intimate questions I could ask a stranger.

“Like I am dying,” Chris said. 

“Oh my gosh, you’ve got to get back with one somehow. How about leasing or half leasing or volunteering?” 

By the time she walked away, she looked cheered up and resolved. She had my blessing to not give up on horses—a vital nutrient, in my long experience, for happiness.

For several years, my friend Anna had volunteered at a nearby thoroughbred rescue stable where she enjoyed grooming and handling the horses, although she didn’t ride them. She had wanted a horse but never owned one.

When her son died in an accident, she told me, “The only thing that helped was the horses. I would go out and just brush them for hours. And I’d smell them and listen to them breathe and chew. “

For those of us smitten early and hard with horses, they are the recharger pack to our life force, our proven power source, our escape into a timeless place of peace and adventure.

Approaching my seventieth birthday, I booked a trip as part of a historic and fast ride in Scotland. By the time Covid delays were past, so was my seventy-first birthday. With six other American and European women, I did something called Riding the Marches or the Common Ridings, galloping the countryside with about 200 Scots riders for many hours daily. 

The oldest man in the ride was a lean and fit retired local rugby referee of 72. I was the oldest woman by far. Local families and school classes turned out by the hundreds to cheer us on from the roadsides, and although my boots, breeches, jacket and helmet didn’t betray my age, my face did. People stared at me; so, I shouted at them, “Yes! I can do this, too! Why aren’t you doing it?”

I had come several thousand miles to run around in unknown territory on an unfamiliar horse. I had the time of my life—or one of them, anyway. And when my little group saw I could more than keep up with them, we became fast friends, horse crazy sisters forever. 

I met Carol at a class reunion where she was presenting a talk about riding in the toughest horse race in the world, the Mongol Derby. She is about 15 years younger than I am, yet I felt that horsey kinship that erases distance. The Mongol Derby involves a couple dozen Mongol horses per rider galloping a total of 621 miles over rough terrain in unforgiving conditions. Since Carol’s idea of a good time was endurance rides of 100 miles or more, it was her logical next step. She not only finished well up in that first Mongol Derby pack, but four years later, after retiring from her law job, she tied for eleventh place of 46 riders. 

Mongol philosophy says the seat of consciousness is in the chest, which contains our hiimori or wind-horse. This creature’s power needs maintaining. Riding a great, quick pony strengthens this and improves your destiny. 

Over many years of talking with women who love horses, I note our life force strengthened by riding, by handling, by facing all the micro and macro risks and surviving, through time in the pasture, on the trail or in the stable. It is with horses throughout our lives, and to the end of our lives if we choose, that we live vividly and with joy. 

I choose that joy.

Shedding out! It’s that time of year!

Shedding season has arrived, and with it comes the annual ritual of pulling what feels like an entire second horse out of your own. I started on our Gypsy Vanner, The Pirate King, this weekend, and after about an hour, I looked down to find I had nearly created another one at my feet.

Time… not Temperature

When I first entered the horse world and experienced “grooming throughout the seasons,” I was amazed to learn that it’s time, not temperature, that triggers shedding. That is, as daylight stretches further into evening hours, horse biology says, “get rid of that winter coat!”

And, boy, do they ever!

There are some things that can speed up the shedding process, like keeping horses in work. Regular exercise can help move the process along, as increased circulation supports the skin and coat. But at its foundation, a healthy shed begins from within.

From the Inside Out

A good coat starts with good nutrition. Balanced oils and essential amino acids play a quiet but essential role in coat condition, shine, and overall health. When the inside is supported, the outside follows.

The American Saddlebred became a recognized breed evolving from the Kentucky Saddler to the Saddle Horse in the 1800s. This breed was created combining Thoroughbred and Trotting Horse foundation sires that crossed with Canadian Pacers, Hackneys and Morgan Horses.  By the mid-1800s, the Kentucky Saddler had come to be called the Saddlebred, and was one of the most popular breeds in the East.

Civil War Horses

When the Civil War began in 1861, Saddlebreds carried soldiers and generals into the fighting. General Robert E. Lee’s  horse “Traveller” is legendary. During the Battle of Spotsylvania, a Union cannonball was fired, and Traveller, Lee’s horse, reacted by rearing up, causing the cannonball to pass harmlessly underneath him!

There is controversy about General Grant’s horse who was named Cincinnati. Some say he was a Saddlebred, others a Thoroughbred…what do you think?

The breed’s involvement in the war was of great importance, both during and after the conflict. Historians believe the Saddlebred was valuable in helping the South recover from the war. 

Hollywood Horses

One of Hollywood’s most prolific equine stars was Highland Dale. He starred in one of the many versions of “Black Beauty”. He continued acting for the silver screen in “Gypsy Colt”, “Giant”, “Wild is the Wind”, “The Return of Wildfire”, and many others movie and TV roles. Highland Dale won Pasty Awards, which are given to the animals as Oscars are to people. The horse won awards for his roles in “Wild is the Wind”, “Gypsy Colt” and “Fury”.

Saddlebreds are known for their elegant appearance and smooth gaits. Sometimes referred to as the “peacock of the horse world,” they are popular in the show ring, and parade route. They excel in combined driving, dressage, endurance, eventing, western dressage, jumping, and more. The American Saddlebred is the perfect horse for the whole family to enjoy as companions and trail horses as well! 

American Saddlebreds have slim, arched necks and graceful ears, with large eyes and alert expressions that enhance their elegant appearance. Their heads should be well-shaped with a straight profile.

The ideal Saddlebred has a well-portioned body, sloping shoulders, well-sprung ribs, defined withers, a strong back, a level croup, and correct legs. Most Saddlebreds also have a high tail carriage, adding to their characteristic look.

Height: 15-17 hands

Weight: 900-1,000 lbs.

Color: American Saddlebred can have any coat color, including pinto.

Saddlebreds are gaited horses. The Three-Gaited horse walks, trots, and canters.

The Five-Gated horse performs these in addition to the Slow Gait and Rack.

They compete in five primary divisions: Five-Gaited, Three-Gaited, Fine Harness, Park, and Pleasure. In these divisions, they are judged on performance, manners, presence, quality, and conformation.

Sensitive and Intelligent

Saddlebreds are great with children and make wonderful members of the family!

Personal Experience

My first horse was an American Saddlebred, “Odds Golddigger” affectionately known as “Wimsey.” He was my Heart Horse!

His sire was World Grand Champion “Superior Odds.”

I was taught to ride by a wonderful horsewoman, Harriet Himmelstine, of Riverview Valley Stables in Pittsburgh.

Although showing was never my big dream, I did make the rounds in some local shows.

But more than anything, Wimsey was a friend and companion.

I had another wonderful adventure learning to drive with a horse I called “Lovejoy.” Looks like I was having fun!

Life Moved On…

And so did these wonderful horses. Which brings me to my last Saddlebred, “Next Sunday” AKA “The Duke of Denver.”

Denver and I were together for over twenty years and have experienced both good and not-so-good times. We’ve been through injuries, colic, and Lyme Disease. So, if he’s taught me anything, it’s strength, perseverance, and trust in God’s ultimate wisdom. Denver passed away on October 30th, 2025.
